Global market update: APAC shares open lower, US indices gain

Investing.com - APAC indices started slightly lower on Monday. By 10:45 AM AEST (12:45 AM GMT), the S&P/ASX 200 and Nikkei 225 eased 0.2% apiece while the KOSPI 200 saw a 0.3% decrease.

US stocks finished the week positively, buoyed by optimism that the economy is moving towards a soft landing. On Friday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced by 97 points or 0.2%. Similarly, the S&P 500 and the NASDAQ Composite also climbed 0.2%, marking their best weekly performance of the year. Over the week, the S&P 500 increased by 3.9%, now only about 2% below its all-time high in July.

Top performers in the S&P 500 included DexCom Inc (NASDAQ:DXCM), which surged 3.2%, Ulta Beauty Inc (NASDAQ:ULTA), which gained 3.1%, and Tapestry Inc (NYSE:TPR), which also rose 3.1%.

On the other hand, the biggest losers were Amcor (NYSE:AMCR), which fell 3.7%, Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc (NYSE:CMG) Inc, which decreased by 2.8%, and Palo Alto Networks Inc (NASDAQ:PANW), which dropped 2.7%.

US government bond yields experienced some volatility on Friday. A slightly stronger-than-expected consumer inflation expectations report initially pushed Treasury yields higher before they eventually drifted lower for the day.

In the commodity markets, Brent crude oil declined by 1.7% to US$79.68 per barrel. Meanwhile, gold prices increased by 2.1%, reaching US$2,508.01.

Chinese stocks had mixed outcomes on Friday. The Shanghai Composite Index inched up by 0.1% to 2,879.43, while the Shenzhen Composite Index decreased by 0.3% to 1,548.93.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index closed higher, gaining 1.9% to settle at 17,430.16.

Japanese stocks ended the day higher, with the Nikkei Stock Average climbing 3.6% to close at 38,062.67.

Indian shares showed varied performance, with the BSE SENSEX rising or falling by 1.7%, ending the day at 80,436.84.

European stocks displayed mixed results. In the UK, the FTSE 100 Index fell by 0.4% to 8,311.41. On the other hand, continental Europe's markets closed higher, with Germany's DAX rising by 0.8% to 18,322.40 and France's CAC 40 advancing by 0.4% to 7,449.70.
