Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Utilities and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Technology, Consumer Goods and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.12% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.11%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.12%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which rose 1.40% or 1.46 points to trade at 106.05 at the close. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) added 1.13% or 1.37 points to end at 122.35 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) was up 0.99% or 0.41 points to 41.95 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which lost 1.06% or 1.83 points to trade at 171.48 in late trade. Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) declined 0.92% or 0.56 points to end at 60.16 and Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) shed 0.69% or 1.98 points to 284.32.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Estee Lauder Companies Inc (NYSE:EL) which rose 6.24% to 154.09, The AES Corporation (NYSE:AES) which was up 3.88% to settle at 17.92 and Boston Properties Inc (NYSE:BXP) which gained 3.40% to close at 65.30.
The worst performers were Carnival Corporation (NYSE:CCL) which was down 4.94% to 16.34 in late trade, Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) which lost 3.64% to settle at 106.56 and ON Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ:ON) which was down 2.72% to 73.55 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Avalo Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:AVTX) which rose 357.89% to 21.75, Biodexa Pharmaceuticals PLC DRC (NASDAQ:BDRX) which was up 88.59% to settle at 1.62 and CERo Therapeutics Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:CERO) which gained 88.34% to close at 3.07.
The worst performers were Primech Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:PMEC) which was down 66.75% to 1.29 in late trade, Tonix Pharmaceuticals Holding Corp (NASDAQ:TNXP) which lost 43.10% to settle at 0.19 and Gamida Cell Ltd (NASDAQ:GMDA) which was down 39.02% to 0.04 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1870 to 993 and 72 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1955 rose and 1418 declined, while 108 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.80% to 13.01.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 1.25% or 27.75 to $2,240.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 2.09% or 1.70 to hit $83.05 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 1.71% or 1.46 to trade at $86.87 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.35% to 1.08, while USD/JPY rose 0.05% to 151.40.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.21% at 104.28.
