Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Utilities, Healthcare and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Consumer Goods, Oil & Gas and Technology sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.37% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.01%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.12%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 2.27% or 7.59 points to trade at 342.28 at the close. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) added 1.66% or 4.12 points to end at 251.81 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) was up 1.53% or 2.17 points to 144.24 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which lost 1.84% or 3.21 points to trade at 171.01 in late trade. General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) declined 1.67% or 0.28 points to end at 16.16 and Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) shed 0.60% or 0.26 points to 41.91.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Varian Medical Systems Inc (NYSE:VAR) which rose 12.01% to 126.63, WW Grainger Inc (NYSE:GWW) which was up 5.75% to settle at 287.60 and Eversource Energy (NYSE:ES) which gained 5.19% to close at 64.31.
The worst performers were Newell Brands Inc (NYSE:NWL) which was down 21.29% to 24.58 in late trade, Range Resources Corporation (NYSE:RRC) which lost 9.91% to settle at 15.31 and Union Pacific Corporation (NYSE:UNP) which was down 5.30% to 133.70 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Lightbridge Corp (NASDAQ:LTBR) which rose 55.38% to 3.3406, Key Technology Inc (NASDAQ:KTEC) which was up 49.41% to settle at 26.58 and MannKind Corp (NASDAQ:MNKD) which gained 42.57% to close at 3.835.
The worst performers were ConforMIS Inc (NASDAQ:CFMS) which was down 34.14% to 1.50 in late trade, Apollo Medical Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:AMEH) which lost 17.22% to settle at 17.50 and China Customer Relations Centers Inc (NASDAQ:CCRC) which was down 15.23% to 17.36 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1804 to 1311 and 48 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1357 fell and 1146 advanced, while 119 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 3.84% to 11.91.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.69% or 9.30 to $1347.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 0.43% or 0.28 to hit $65.33 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 0.43% or 0.30 to trade at $70.23 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.11% to 1.2423, while USD/JPY rose 0.02% to 109.24.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.01% at 89.03.
