Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Monday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Financials and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Technology, Utilities and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.31%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.52%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 2.05%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which rose 4.51% or 8.29 points to trade at 191.94 at the close. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) added 3.84% or 8.06 points to end at 217.97 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) was up 3.13% or 3.00 points to 98.80 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 3.57% or 2.25 points to trade at 60.76 in late trade. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) declined 3.44% or 4.88 points to end at 137.14 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) shed 2.56% or 3.33 points to 126.54.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were People’s United Financial Inc (NASDAQ:PBCT) which rose 15.05% to 18.04, TripAdvisor Inc (NASDAQ:TRIP) which was up 13.33% to settle at 45.24 and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (NYSE:RCL) which gained 9.36% to close at 86.25.
The worst performers were Viatris Inc (NASDAQ:VTRS) which was down 13.95% to 15.67 in late trade, Nektar Therapeutics (NASDAQ:NKTR) which lost 10.35% to settle at 22.34 and Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which was down 7.12% to 725.71 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were ReTo Eco-Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:RETO) which rose 92.80% to 2.275, Taoping Inc (NASDAQ:TAOP) which was up 73.15% to settle at 12.1900 and Celsion Corp (NASDAQ:CLSN) which gained 52.11% to close at 2.890.
The worst performers were Otonomy Inc (NASDAQ:OTIC) which was down 42.30% to 3.11 in late trade, Ebix Inc (NASDAQ:EBIX) which lost 40.38% to settle at 30.25 and Brainstorm Cell Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:BCLI) which was down 32.90% to 4.63 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1631 to 1470 and 74 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1829 fell and 1362 advanced, while 60 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 3.67% to 22.86.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 1.70% or 30.20 to $1807.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April rose 3.75% or 2.22 to hit $61.48 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 3.40% or 2.11 to trade at $64.25 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.33% to 1.2156, while USD/JPY fell 0.34% to 105.08.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.32% at 90.078.
