Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Monday, as gains in the Technology, Healthcare and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Utilities and Financials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.04%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.47%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.03%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which rose 3.70% or 4.31 points to trade at 120.90 at the close. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) added 1.43% or 0.68 points to end at 48.13 and Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) was up 0.45% or 0.68 points to 152.28 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which lost 4.08% or 3.73 points to trade at 87.58 in late trade. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) declined 3.66% or 2.03 points to end at 53.37 and The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) shed 2.77% or 3.73 points to 130.71.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were IHS Markit Ltd (NYSE:INFO) which rose 7.18% to 99.23, Coty Inc (NYSE:COTY) which was up 6.46% to settle at 7.33 and Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) which gained 6.06% to close at 92.47.
The worst performers were EOG Resources Inc (NYSE:EOG) which was down 6.55% to 48.06 in late trade, Pioneer Natural Resources Co (NYSE:PXD) which lost 6.57% to settle at 102.84 and ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) which was down 5.86% to 40.27 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were China Automotive Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CAAS) which rose 126.37% to 8.67, Sundial Growers Inc (NASDAQ:SNDL) which was up 100.19% to settle at 0.74 and Jaguar Health Inc (NASDAQ:JAGX) which gained 61.90% to close at 0.3400.
The worst performers were Nikola Corp (NASDAQ:NKLA) which was down 26.96% to 20.40 in late trade, Appian Corp (NASDAQ:APPN) which lost 25.80% to settle at 143.85 and Kandi Technologies Group Inc (NASDAQ:KNDI) which was down 25.84% to 10.10 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2183 to 761 and 58 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1806 fell and 1039 advanced, while 59 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.48% to 20.94.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.32% or 5.65 to $1782.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 0.11% or 0.05 to hit $45.58 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 0.27% or 0.13 to trade at $48.12 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.24% to 1.1933, while USD/JPY rose 0.27% to 104.36.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.15% at 91.938.
