Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Technology, Consumer Services and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Utilities, Oil & Gas and Telecoms sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.91%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.70%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.51%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which rose 1.42% or 1.24 points to trade at 88.44 at the close. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) added 1.30% or 0.76 points to end at 59.18 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) was up 1.03% or 3.07 points to 300.63 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW), which lost 4.23% or 1.41 points to trade at 31.96 in late trade. The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) declined 3.68% or 3.56 points to end at 93.29 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) shed 3.16% or 2.74 points to 84.00.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were FLIR Systems Inc (NASDAQ:FLIR) which rose 9.63% to 45.41, Activision Blizzard Inc (NASDAQ:ATVI) which was up 6.33% to settle at 72.87 and KLA-Tencor Corporation (NASDAQ:KLAC) which gained 5.26% to close at 163.81.
The worst performers were Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:OXY) which was down 12.53% to 13.40 in late trade, Cincinnati Financial Corporation (NASDAQ:CINF) which lost 9.97% to settle at 53.12 and Leggett & Platt Incorporated (NYSE:LEG) which was down 8.50% to 27.76 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were MacroGenics Inc (NASDAQ:MGNX) which rose 230.92% to 25.15, Remark Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:MARK) which was up 65.16% to settle at 1.0400 and IZEA Inc (NASDAQ:IZEA) which gained 53.39% to close at 0.5200.
The worst performers were Tuesday Morning Corp (NASDAQ:TUES) which was down 41.70% to 0.260 in late trade, My Size Inc (NASDAQ:MYSZ) which lost 40.40% to settle at 0.900 and CleanSpark Inc (NASDAQ:CLSK) which was down 32.79% to 2.05 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1974 to 888 and 76 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1533 fell and 1119 advanced, while 64 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.52% to 34.12.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 1.42% or 24.30 to $1686.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 1.79% or 0.44 to hit $24.12 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.44% or 0.13 to trade at $29.84 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.03% to 1.0797, while USD/JPY fell 0.06% to 106.08.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.44% at 100.200.
