Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Technology, Consumer Services and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Financials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.85%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.38%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.43%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG), which rose 2.42% or 3.11 points to trade at 131.42 at the close. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) added 1.21% or 4.60 points to end at 384.76 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) was up 0.62% or 1.65 points to 266.31 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Exxon Mobil Corp (NYSE:XOM), which lost 4.91% or 2.16 points to trade at 41.87 in late trade. Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) declined 4.22% or 3.80 points to end at 86.27 and Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) shed 4.11% or 1.79 points to 41.73.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Apache Corporation (NASDAQ:APA) which rose 17.29% to 16.01, Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM) which was up 15.22% to settle at 107.19 and United Parcel Service Inc (NYSE:UPS) which gained 14.38% to close at 141.46.
The worst performers were Smith AO Corporation (NYSE:AOS) which was down 8.67% to 48.46 in late trade, Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:OXY) which lost 7.40% to settle at 15.77 and WestRock Co (NYSE:WRK) which was down 6.61% to 28.26 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Precipio Inc (NASDAQ:PRPO) which rose 469.11% to 7.000, Taoping Inc (NASDAQ:TAOP) which was up 331.52% to settle at 8.8000 and Liminal BioSciences Inc (NASDAQ:LMNL) which gained 123.59% to close at 23.79.
The worst performers were Genocea Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:GNCA) which was down 30.58% to 3.450 in late trade, Urban Tea Inc (NASDAQ:MYT) which lost 25.28% to settle at 0.4445 and Sypris Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:SYPR) which was down 20.65% to 1.2300 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2014 to 1031 and 85 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1506 fell and 1271 advanced, while 75 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 2.74% to 24.76.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.26% or 5.10 to $1948.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 2.25% or 0.93 to hit $40.34 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 0.02% or 0.01 to trade at $43.65 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.03% to 1.1843, while USD/JPY rose 0.08% to 104.81.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.56% at 92.905.
