Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Monday, as gains in the Consumer Goods, Utilities and Technology sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Financials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.60%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.31%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.38%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 2.88% or 6.70 points to trade at 239.41 at the close. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) added 1.37% or 1.67 points to end at 123.92 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) was up 1.02% or 1.40 points to 138.59 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 4.01% or 2.08 points to trade at 49.90 in late trade. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) declined 3.40% or 1.87 points to end at 53.18 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) shed 3.02% or 2.82 points to 90.46.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were MarketAxess Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:MKTX) which rose 5.49% to 568.75, L Brands Inc (NYSE:LB) which was up 4.76% to settle at 40.07 and American Airlines Group (NASDAQ:AAL) which gained 4.63% to close at 17.16.
The worst performers were Arconic Corp (NYSE:ARNC) which was down 7.80% to 28.49 in late trade, CenturyLink Inc (NYSE:LUMN) which lost 5.30% to settle at 10.00 and TechnipFMC PLC (NYSE:FTI) which was down 4.87% to 9.77 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Obalon Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:OBLN) which rose 130.84% to 2.470, Greenland Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:GTEC) which was up 54.77% to settle at 8.59 and Oncternal Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ONCT) which gained 50.75% to close at 4.01.
The worst performers were Scpharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:SCPH) which was down 34.38% to 5.74 in late trade, Globus Maritime Ltd (NASDAQ:GLBS) which lost 30.01% to settle at 7.3000 and Curis Inc (NASDAQ:CRIS) which was down 27.66% to 1.360 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1850 to 1242 and 82 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1636 fell and 1345 advanced, while 80 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 4.52% to 21.73.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 1.23% or 22.69 to $1862.69 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 1.30% or 0.60 to hit $45.66 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 1.18% or 0.58 to trade at $48.67 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.05% to 1.2114, while USD/JPY fell 0.10% to 104.03.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.17% at 90.847.
