Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Technology, Oil & Gas and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Industrials, Healthcare and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.55%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.02%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.59%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD), which rose 1.11% or 3.61 points to trade at 328.71 at the close. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) added 1.11% or 0.34 points to end at 31.06 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) was up 0.81% or 1.28 points to 159.03 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which lost 2.61% or 3.38 points to trade at 126.11 in late trade. Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) declined 1.85% or 5.65 points to end at 300.19 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) shed 1.77% or 4.56 points to 253.55.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) which rose 6.98% to 1,139.01, Ralph Lauren Corp Class A (NYSE:RL) which was up 4.53% to settle at 181.31 and Deckers Outdoor Corporation (NYSE:DECK) which gained 4.52% to close at 1,079.59.
The worst performers were Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) which was down 8.05% to 153.20 in late trade, Builders FirstSource Inc (NYSE:BLDR) which lost 4.89% to settle at 162.74 and MarketAxess Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:MKTX) which was down 4.86% to 206.35 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Tharimmune Inc (NASDAQ:THAR) which rose 1,398.36% to 4.57, Aerwins Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:AWIN) which was up 143.09% to settle at 9.14 and Sharps Technology Inc (NASDAQ:STSS) which gained 141.44% to close at 0.52.
The worst performers were Applied DNA Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:APDN) which was down 69.85% to 0.60 in late trade, Innovative Eyewear Inc (NASDAQ:LUCY) which lost 58.29% to settle at 0.41 and Marpai Inc (NASDAQ:MRAI) which was down 53.85% to 0.90 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1809 to 1045 and 60 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1902 fell and 1448 advanced, while 124 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 4.53% to 12.92.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 1.11% or 26.00 to $2,360.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 3.14% or 2.44 to hit $80.16 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 1.64% or 1.36 to trade at $84.24 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.02% to 1.09, while USD/JPY rose 0.18% to 157.15.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.11% at 104.52.
