Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Monday, as gains in the Healthcare, Technology and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Financials and Basic Materials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.45%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.01%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.78%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE), which rose 2.36% or 0.88 points to trade at 38.10 at the close. Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) added 1.98% or 1.51 points to end at 77.91 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) was up 1.57% or 4.88 points to 315.01 in late trade.
Biggest losers included American Express Company (NYSE:AXP), which lost 4.66% or 4.17 points to trade at 85.33 in late trade. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) declined 3.39% or 4.53 points to end at 128.91 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) shed 3.12% or 3.50 points to 108.61.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Nektar Therapeutics (NASDAQ:NKTR) which rose 9.15% to 22.67, Cardinal Health Inc (NYSE:CAH) which was up 6.74% to settle at 53.24 and Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:VRTX) which gained 5.03% to close at 285.28.
The worst performers were Under Armour Inc C (NYSE:UA) which was down 10.51% to 8.00 in late trade, Under Armour Inc A (NYSE:UAA) which lost 9.72% to settle at 9.01 and Alliance Data Systems Corp (NYSE:ADS) which was down 8.82% to 43.02 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Remark Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:MARK) which rose 72.12% to 1.7900, Cellect Biotechnology Ltd (NASDAQ:APOP) which was up 66.67% to settle at 3.950 and MyoKardia Inc (NASDAQ:MYOK) which gained 58.62% to close at 96.90.
The worst performers were Recro Pharm (NASDAQ:REPH) which was down 39.67% to 5.08 in late trade, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory (NASDAQ:RMCF) which lost 16.67% to settle at 4.10 and Marathon Patent Group Inc (NASDAQ:MARA) which was down 15.08% to 0.760 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1909 to 949 and 84 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1472 fell and 1215 advanced, while 45 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.47% to 27.57 a new 1-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.79% or 13.50 to $1700.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 0.93% or 0.23 to hit $24.51 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.43% or 0.13 to trade at $30.12 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.00% to 1.0806, while USD/JPY rose 0.00% to 107.67.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.51% at 100.280.
