Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Technology, Consumer Services and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Basic Materials, Oil & Gas and Financials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.34%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.48%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 1.67%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which rose 2.60% or 3.02 points to trade at 118.99 at the close. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) added 2.54% or 5.35 points to end at 216.36 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) was up 2.15% or 0.97 points to 46.41 in late trade.
Biggest losers included American Express Company (NYSE:AXP), which lost 4.55% or 5.27 points to trade at 110.68 in late trade. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) declined 4.08% or 7.69 points to end at 181.00 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) shed 3.48% or 4.95 points to 137.16.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Coty Inc (NYSE:COTY) which rose 8.18% to 4.63, Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc (NYSE:CMG) which was up 5.11% to settle at 1306.60 and Invesco Plc (NYSE:IVZ) which gained 5.23% to close at 15.29.
The worst performers were Air Products and Chemicals Inc (NYSE:APD) which was down 9.96% to 279.11 in late trade, Kohls Corp (NYSE:KSS) which lost 9.87% to settle at 23.57 and Nordstrom Inc (NYSE:JWN) which was down 9.48% to 16.05 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Five Prime Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:FPRX) which rose 233.71% to 17.82, Fuel Tech Inc (NASDAQ:FTEK) which was up 72.14% to settle at 1.3100 and Equillium Inc (NASDAQ:EQ) which gained 41.95% to close at 4.94.
The worst performers were Pareteum Corp (NASDAQ:TEUM) which was down 32.55% to 0.3170 in late trade, eGain Corporation (NASDAQ:EGAN) which lost 28.96% to settle at 12.04 and Teligent Inc (NASDAQ:TLGT) which was down 24.59% to 0.5088 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1566 to 1275 and 81 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1403 fell and 1321 advanced, while 73 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 3.19% to 24.01 a new 1-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.80% or 15.05 to $1861.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 0.19% or 0.08 to hit $41.44 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 0.30% or 0.13 to trade at $43.74 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.36% to 1.1771, while USD/JPY rose 0.15% to 105.44.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.32% at 93.035.
