Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Technology, Healthcare and Financials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Consumer Services and Utilities sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.33%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.05%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.33%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM), which rose 1.67% or 2.60 points to trade at 158.32 at the close. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) added 1.20% or 0.61 points to end at 51.32 and 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) was up 0.82% or 1.91 points to 235.57 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM), which lost 2.52% or 1.92 points to trade at 74.26 in late trade. The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) declined 1.78% or 2.51 points to end at 138.88 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) shed 1.64% or 1.07 points to 64.17.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Autodesk Inc (NASDAQ:ADSK) which rose 14.87% to 137.70, H&R Block Inc (NYSE:HRB) which was up 11.49% to settle at 28.73 and Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) which gained 4.08% to close at 12.240.
The worst performers were Dollar Tree Inc (NASDAQ:DLTR) which was down 14.48% to 89.25 in late trade, Kroger Company (NYSE:KR) which lost 6.35% to settle at 26.23 and Ross Stores Inc (NASDAQ:ROST) which was down 6.35% to 75.40 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were ShiftPixy Inc (NASDAQ:PIXY) which rose 66.15% to 4.27, Zosano Pharma Corp (NASDAQ:ZSAN) which was up 56.57% to settle at 14.530 and Regenxbio Inc (NASDAQ:RGNX) which gained 26.90% to close at 37.50.
The worst performers were Wheeler Real Estate Investment Trust Inc (NASDAQ:WHLR) which was down 17.91% to 4.080 in late trade, Sellas Life Sciences Group Inc (NASDAQ:SLS) which lost 15.33% to settle at 5.0800 and AeroVironment Inc (NASDAQ:AVAV) which was down 14.88% to 43.01 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1568 to 1495 and 137 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1598 rose and 907 declined, while 151 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.78% to 17.85.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.66% or 8.80 to $1326.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April fell 2.06% or 1.29 to hit $61.31 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 1.96% or 1.29 to trade at $64.50 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.06% to 1.2412, while USD/JPY fell 0.07% to 106.06.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.01% at 89.55.
