Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Monday, as gains in the Consumer Goods, Healthcare and Financials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.30%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.09%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.16%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which rose 0.74% or 0.35 points to trade at 47.45 at the close. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) added 0.55% or 0.78 points to end at 142.19 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) was up 0.51% or 2.03 points to 399.92 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which lost 1.70% or 1.73 points to trade at 100.22 in late trade. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) declined 1.04% or 4.30 points to end at 410.82 and Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) shed 0.99% or 2.28 points to 227.87.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Tyson Foods Inc (NYSE:TSN) which rose 8.70% to 77.31, Viatris Inc (NASDAQ:VTRS) which was up 6.18% to settle at 15.13 and Mosaic Co (NYSE:MOS) which gained 3.40% to close at 32.56.
The worst performers were Air Products and Chemicals Inc (NYSE:APD) which was down 5.15% to 275.85 in late trade, Darden Restaurants Inc (NYSE:DRI) which lost 4.42% to settle at 138.31 and Diamondback Energy Inc (NASDAQ:FANG) which was down 3.51% to 77.24 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Golden Nugget Online Gaming Inc (NASDAQ:GNOG) which rose 50.77% to 18.50, Cortexyme Inc (NASDAQ:CRTX) which was up 47.77% to settle at 99.21 and Tarena Intl Adr (NASDAQ:TEDU) which gained 40.30% to close at 1.880.
The worst performers were Axsome Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:AXSM) which was down 46.58% to 27.33 in late trade, Aterian Inc (NASDAQ:ATER) which lost 33.35% to settle at 5.49 and Biovie Inc (NASDAQ:BIVI) which was down 30.19% to 8.97 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1930 to 1218 and 146 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1833 fell and 1642 advanced, while 155 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 3.53% to 16.72.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 1.80% or 31.75 to $1731.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 2.15% or 1.47 to hit $66.81 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 2.02% or 1.43 to trade at $69.27 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.20% to 1.1737, while USD/JPY rose 0.10% to 110.36.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.20% at 92.983.
