Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Monday, as gains in the Utilities, Healthcare and Technology sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Financials, Oil & Gas and Basic Materials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.28% to hit a new 3-month low, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.15%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.45%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN), which rose 2.33% or 5.31 points to trade at 233.18 at the close. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) added 2.14% or 5.33 points to end at 253.92 and Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) was up 1.35% or 2.33 points to 175.51 in late trade.
Biggest losers included American Express Company (NYSE:AXP), which lost 4.87% or 8.07 points to trade at 157.63 in late trade. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) declined 3.71% or 12.16 points to end at 315.51 and Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) shed 2.75% or 1.48 points to 52.40.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Illumina Inc (NASDAQ:ILMN) which rose 16.97% to 226.94, Newmont Goldcorp Corp (NYSE:NEM) which was up 7.02% to settle at 45.12 and Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) which gained 6.95% to close at 147.90.
The worst performers were First Republic Bank (NYSE:FRC) which was down 61.83% to 31.21 in late trade, Comerica Inc (NYSE:CMA) which lost 27.67% to settle at 42.54 and KeyCorp (NYSE:KEY) which was down 27.33% to 11.38 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Provention Bio Inc (NASDAQ:PRVB) which rose 259.70% to 24.10, Cipher Mining Inc (NASDAQ:CIFR) which was up 37.88% to settle at 1.82 and EUDA Health Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:EUDA) which gained 36.63% to close at 2.76.
The worst performers were Genelux Corp (NASDAQ:GNLX) which was down 36.16% to 14.25 in late trade, icad inc (NASDAQ:ICAD) which lost 35.56% to settle at 1.54 and First Foundation Inc (NASDAQ:FFWM) which was down 33.07% to 7.75 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2193 to 870 and 70 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2292 fell and 1355 advanced, while 149 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 6.94% to 26.52 a new 3-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 2.77% or 51.70 to $1,918.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April fell 2.60% or 1.99 to hit $74.69 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 0.07% or 0.06 to trade at $80.75 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.00% to 1.07, while USD/JPY rose 0.02% to 133.21.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.89% at 103.22.
