Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Healthcare, Technology and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Utilities and Basic Materials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.21%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.36%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.76%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), which rose 1.30% or 2.78 points to trade at 216.47 at the close. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) added 1.09% or 3.38 points to end at 312.22 and Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) was up 0.82% or 1.69 points to 208.10 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Exxon Mobil Corp (NYSE:XOM), which lost 3.17% or 1.34 points to trade at 40.88 in late trade. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) declined 1.99% or 3.54 points to end at 174.73 and Raytheon Technologies Corp (NYSE:RTX) shed 1.50% or 0.93 points to 60.95.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Gap Inc (NYSE:GPS) which rose 10.39% to 17.11, JM Smucker Company (NYSE:SJM) which was up 6.87% to settle at 120.75 and Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) which gained 5.37% to close at 248.22.
The worst performers were Best Buy Co Inc (NYSE:BBY) which was down 4.03% to 112.64 in late trade, Tiffany & Co (NYSE:TIF) which lost 3.97% to settle at 121.99 and Helmerich and Payne Inc (NYSE:HP) which was down 3.44% to 16.82 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Pioneer Pow (NASDAQ:PPSI) which rose 67.86% to 2.350, Bigcommerce Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:BIGC) which was up 36.87% to settle at 104.09 and Lonestar Resources Ltd (NASDAQ:LONE) which gained 34.81% to close at 0.364.
The worst performers were Urban Tea Inc (NASDAQ:MYT) which was down 29.37% to 0.1998 in late trade, Anixa Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:ANIX) which lost 19.66% to settle at 1.88 and NanoVibronix Inc (NASDAQ:NAOV) which was down 19.48% to 0.700 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1568 to 1478 and 93 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1656 rose and 1132 declined, while 87 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.52% to 22.03.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.23% or 4.50 to $1934.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 1.81% or 0.77 to hit $43.39 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 to trade at $46.42 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.03% to 1.1836, while USD/JPY rose 0.02% to 106.38.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.30% at 93.010.
