Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Utilities, Technology and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Industrials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.20%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.12%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.29%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), which rose 1.29% or 4.29 points to trade at 336.06 at the close. Honeywell International Inc (NASDAQ:HON) added 1.26% or 2.38 points to end at 191.59 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) was up 1.24% or 4.09 points to 334.99 in late trade.
Biggest losers included 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which lost 5.69% or 6.10 points to trade at 101.06 in late trade. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) declined 2.04% or 5.75 points to end at 276.06 and Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) shed 1.51% or 0.81 points to 52.82.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were JB Hunt Transport Services Inc (NASDAQ:JBHT) which rose 4.09% to 189.35, DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc (NYSE:DVA) which was up 4.04% to settle at 101.09 and Charles River Laboratories (NYSE:CRL) which gained 3.26% to close at 203.54.
The worst performers were CBRE Group Inc Class A (NYSE:CBRE) which was down 6.71% to 79.07 in late trade, First Solar Inc (NASDAQ:FSLR) which lost 5.77% to settle at 170.50 and 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) which was down 5.69% to 101.06 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Avalo Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:AVTX) which rose 81.13% to 0.22, Zyversa Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ZVSA) which was up 47.86% to settle at 0.19 and Impel Neuropharma Inc (NASDAQ:IMPL) which gained 44.98% to close at 0.80.
The worst performers were MicroCloud Hologram Inc (NASDAQ:HOLO) which was down 80.06% to 2.12 in late trade, Infinity Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:INFI) which lost 46.98% to settle at 0.05 and Eiger Biopharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:EIGR) which was down 40.58% to 0.41 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1783 to 1131 and 77 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2215 fell and 1266 advanced, while 130 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 5.27% to 13.48.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.20% or 3.95 to $1,931.15 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 0.07% or 0.06 to hit $88.78 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 0.07% or 0.06 to trade at $92.12 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.19% to 1.07, while USD/JPY rose 0.25% to 147.45.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.04% at 104.38.
