Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Monday, as gains in the Healthcare, Basic Materials and Technology sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Financials and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.02%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.05%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.28%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD), which rose 1.16% or 1.74 points to trade at 151.39 at the close. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) added 1.01% or 1.61 points to end at 161.47 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) was up 0.60% or 0.38 points to 63.32 in late trade.
Biggest losers included The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV), which lost 2.56% or 3.24 points to trade at 123.23 in late trade. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) declined 0.95% or 2.12 points to end at 220.35 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) shed 0.86% or 1.23 points to 142.51.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Frontier Communications Corp (NASDAQ:FTR) which rose 3.68% to 13.25, Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE:NEM) which was up 3.54% to settle at 38.30 and United Rentals Inc (NYSE:URI) which gained 3.22% to close at 110.71.
The worst performers were Expedia Inc (NASDAQ:EXPE) which was down 4.51% to 142.53 in late trade, Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which lost 3.69% to settle at 3.650 and Range Resources Corporation (NYSE:RRC) which was down 3.16% to 17.59 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were MaxPoint Interactive Inc (NASDAQ:MXPT) which rose 148.19% to 13.70, Fusion Telecommunications International Inc (NASDAQ:FSNN) which was up 86.18% to settle at 2.290 and Alliqua Inc (NASDAQ:ALQA) which gained 66.92% to close at 0.440.
The worst performers were Uni-Pixel Inc (NASDAQ:UNXL) which was down 75.85% to 0.0628 in late trade, Diana Containerships Inc (NASDAQ:DCIX) which lost 21.80% to settle at 0.7429 and Forterra Inc (NASDAQ:FRTA) which was down 17.47% to 3.78 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1644 to 1451 and 145 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1254 rose and 1241 declined, while 143 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.53% to 11.34.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 1.37% or 17.72 to $1315.62 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 2.38% or 1.14 to hit $46.73 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 0.88% or 0.46 to trade at $51.52 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.44% to 1.1978, while USD/JPY fell 0.08% to 109.28.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.30% at 92.19.
