Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Utilities and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.83%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.56%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.39%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD), which rose 2.03% or 7.55 points to trade at 379.46 at the close. McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) added 1.54% or 4.29 points to end at 282.87 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) was up 1.36% or 2.36 points to 176.08 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 1.55% or 0.66 points to trade at 42.05 in late trade. Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) declined 0.36% or 0.57 points to end at 156.19 and Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) shed 0.26% or 0.13 points to 49.14.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were International Paper (NYSE:IP) which rose 10.96% to 38.77, The AES Corporation (NYSE:AES) which was up 4.47% to settle at 15.54 and Synopsys Inc (NASDAQ:SNPS) which gained 4.30% to close at 584.71.
The worst performers were FMC Corporation (NYSE:FMC) which was down 6.65% to 61.67 in late trade, Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) which lost 4.84% to settle at 181.42 and Monolithic Power Systems Inc (NASDAQ:MPWR) which was down 3.56% to 650.28 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Ontrak Inc (NASDAQ:OTRK) which rose 131.58% to 0.44, Fusion Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:FUSN) which was up 99.06% to settle at 21.18 and Scworx Corp (NASDAQ:WORX) which gained 53.51% to close at 2.84.
The worst performers were Greenwave Technology Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:GWAV) which was down 57.91% to 0.16 in late trade, Seelos Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:SEEL) which lost 29.18% to settle at 0.65 and Acutus Medical Inc (NASDAQ:AFIB) which was down 27.02% to 0.19 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1897 to 965 and 82 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1911 rose and 1461 declined, while 135 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 3.56% to 13.82.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.12% or 2.65 to $2,161.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 0.60% or 0.49 to hit $82.65 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 0.46% or 0.40 to trade at $87.29 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.06% to 1.09, while USD/JPY rose 1.17% to 150.88.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.23% at 103.48.
