Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Monday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Financials and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Technology, Consumer Goods and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 4.28% to hit a new 6-month high, while the S&P 500 index climbed 2.46%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.14%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were American Express Company (NYSE:AXP), which rose 22.50% or 21.76 points to trade at 118.45 at the close. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) added 16.85% or 26.58 points to end at 184.32 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) was up 14.91% or 15.35 points to 118.31 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD), which lost 3.72% or 10.58 points to trade at 273.66 in late trade. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) declined 2.65% or 3.79 points to end at 139.44 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) shed 1.03% or 2.24 points to 214.32.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were SL Green Realty Corp (NYSE:SLG) which rose 38.52% to 60.70, Regency Centers Corporation (NASDAQ:REG) which was up 37.36% to settle at 46.77 and Carnival Corporation (NYSE:CCL) which gained 36.25% to close at 18.83.
The worst performers were Biogen Inc (NASDAQ:BIIB) which was down 28.07% to 236.59 in late trade, Clorox Co (NYSE:CLX) which lost 8.85% to settle at 198.77 and Whirlpool Corporation (NYSE:WHR) which was down 8.59% to 184.32 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Sundial Growers Inc (NASDAQ:SNDL) which rose 59.88% to 0.40, Medalist Diversified Reit Inc (NASDAQ:MDRR) which was up 49.44% to settle at 2.66 and Sotherly Hotels Inc (NASDAQ:SOHO) which gained 50.96% to close at 2.37.
The worst performers were Arcturus Therapeutics Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:ARCT) which was down 45.53% to 34.51 in late trade, Altimmune Inc (NASDAQ:ALT) which lost 35.10% to settle at 8.080 and Humanigen Inc (NASDAQ:HGEN) which was down 32.17% to 7.950 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2425 to 563 and 34 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2047 rose and 789 declined, while 39 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 4.55% to 23.73 a new 1-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 4.27% or 83.30 to $1868.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 8.21% or 3.05 to hit $40.19 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 7.38% or 2.91 to trade at $42.36 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.35% to 1.1830, while USD/JPY rose 2.01% to 105.41.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.53% at 92.715.
