Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Financials, Basic Materials and Oil & Gas sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Consumer Services, Technology and Utilities sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.80%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.45%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.02%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM), which rose 3.49% or 4.84 points to trade at 143.43 at the close. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) added 3.01% or 9.43 points to end at 323.09 and Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) was up 2.79% or 6.36 points to 234.32 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which lost 2.44% or 0.71 points to trade at 28.37 in late trade. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) declined 1.97% or 0.66 points to end at 32.91 and Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) shed 0.82% or 1.74 points to 210.43.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Catalent Inc (NYSE:CTLT) which rose 6.72% to 43.04, Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE:WFC) which was up 4.51% to settle at 42.45 and Bio-Techne Corp (NASDAQ:TECH) which gained 4.28% to close at 79.35.
The worst performers were McCormick & Company Incorporated (NYSE:MKC) which was down 5.52% to 86.78 in late trade, United Airlines Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:UAL) which lost 4.58% to settle at 53.72 and Micron Technology Inc (NASDAQ:MU) which was down 4.09% to 64.33 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Sigilon Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:SGTX) which rose 438.17% to 21.15, Eco Wave Power Global AB ADR (NASDAQ:WAVE) which was up 53.13% to settle at 2.45 and Kintara Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:KTRA) which gained 40.80% to close at 4.21.
The worst performers were BioXcel Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:BTAI) which was down 63.84% to 6.39 in late trade, iMedia Brands Inc (NASDAQ:IMBI) which lost 33.02% to settle at 0.13 and Evelo Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:EVLO) which was down 30.68% to 0.18 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2105 to 874 and 83 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2182 rose and 1319 declined, while 186 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.82% to 13.54.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.33% or 6.30 to $1,915.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 0.36% or 0.25 to hit $69.81 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.30% or 0.22 to trade at $74.46 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.42% to 1.09, while USD/JPY rose 0.26% to 144.84.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.47% at 103.03.
