Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Monday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Financials and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Technology, Utilities and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.60%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.16%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.47%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM), which rose 3.21% or 4.02 points to trade at 129.31 at the close. JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) added 2.87% or 3.58 points to end at 128.49 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) was up 2.09% or 3.34 points to 163.12 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which lost 2.40% or 2.90 points to trade at 117.81 in late trade. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) declined 1.49% or 4.19 points to end at 276.38 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) shed 1.31% or 2.10 points to 158.15.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were First Republic Bank (NYSE:FRC) which rose 11.97% to 13.84, International Flavors & Fragrances Inc (NYSE:IFF) which was up 6.35% to settle at 89.62 and Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co (NYSE:HPE) which gained 5.45% to close at 15.01.
The worst performers were Carnival Corporation (NYSE:CCL) which was down 4.77% to 8.79 in late trade, American Tower Corp (NYSE:AMT) which lost 3.24% to settle at 193.15 and Alphabet Inc Class C (NASDAQ:GOOG) which was down 2.83% to 103.06 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were WiSA Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:WISA) which rose 89.47% to 3.60, First Citizens BancShares Inc (NASDAQ:FCNCA) which was up 53.74% to settle at 895.61 and Gorilla Technology Group Inc (NASDAQ:GRRR) which gained 41.15% to close at 11.80.
The worst performers were KludeIn I Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:NIR) which was down 59.08% to 4.98 in late trade, Codiak BioSciences Inc (NASDAQ:CDAK) which lost 56.70% to settle at 0.19 and Unity Biotechnology Inc (NASDAQ:UBX) which was down 53.01% to 1.95 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2217 to 799 and 104 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2150 rose and 1468 declined, while 202 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 5.24% to 20.60.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 1.28% or 25.65 to $1,976.05 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 5.41% or 3.75 to hit $73.01 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 4.38% or 3.27 to trade at $77.86 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.38% to 1.08, while USD/JPY rose 0.67% to 131.57.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.27% at 102.48.
