Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Financials and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Healthcare, Technology and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.59% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.06%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 1.33%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which rose 5.35% or 11.08 points to trade at 218.08 at the close. JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) added 3.79% or 6.13 points to end at 167.83 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) was up 3.21% or 5.40 points to 173.61 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM), which lost 2.83% or 7.23 points to trade at 248.23 in late trade. Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) declined 2.45% or 1.54 points to end at 61.25 and UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) shed 2.27% or 11.38 points to 490.90.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) which rose 11.67% to 24.31, General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) which was up 7.47% to settle at 65.74 and Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:OXY) which gained 7.47% to close at 33.38.
The worst performers were Generac Holdlings Inc (NYSE:GNRC) which was down 4.55% to 332.07 in late trade, PerkinElmer Inc (NYSE:PKI) which lost 4.55% to settle at 183.45 and Bio-Rad Laboratories Inc (NYSE:BIO) which was down 4.53% to 702.09 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were ATA Inc (NASDAQ:AACG) which rose 114.29% to 2.550, Hoth Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:HOTH) which was up 85.71% to settle at 1.3000 and NLS Pharmaceutics AG (NASDAQ:NLSP) which gained 26.05% to close at 1.500.
The worst performers were Gritstone Oncology Inc (NASDAQ:GRTS) which was down 42.41% to 7.020 in late trade, AVROBIO Inc (NASDAQ:AVRO) which lost 36.63% to settle at 2.560 and Valneva SE ADR (NASDAQ:VALN) which was down 22.59% to 39.47 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1782 to 1506 and 89 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2263 fell and 1530 advanced, while 160 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.80% to 16.91.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.82% or 14.80 to $1814.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 1.46% or 1.11 to hit $77.19 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 0.04% or 0.03 to trade at $80.19 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.02% to 1.1287, while USD/JPY fell 0.01% to 116.12.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.07% at 96.280.
