Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Utilities and Financials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Consumer Goods, Technology and Healthcare sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.33% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.33%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.29%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which rose 3.33% or 6.38 points to trade at 198.14 at the close. Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) added 2.53% or 5.28 points to end at 213.60 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) was up 1.50% or 1.48 points to 99.87 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD), which lost 2.75% or 7.58 points to trade at 268.27 in late trade. Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM) declined 1.97% or 4.75 points to end at 236.20 and Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) shed 1.45% or 1.99 points to 135.70.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Cimarex Energy Co (NYSE:XEC) which rose 10.06% to 57.24, Marathon Oil Corporation (NYSE:MRO) which was up 9.80% to settle at 11.20 and Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) which gained 7.74% to close at 136.56.
The worst performers were Arconic Corp (NYSE:ARNC) which was down 10.18% to 23.11 in late trade, Discovery Inc Class A (NASDAQ:DISCA) which lost 7.11% to settle at 51.36 and Discovery Communications C Inc (NASDAQ:DISCK) which was down 6.76% to 42.89 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Yunhong CTI Ltd (NASDAQ:CTIB) which rose 32.87% to 3.149, Solid Biosciences LLC (NASDAQ:SLDB) which was up 32.75% to settle at 9.12 and Sunesis Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:SNSS) which gained 22.47% to close at 4.3600.
The worst performers were Workhorse Group Inc (NASDAQ:WKHS) which was down 42.57% to 18.00 in late trade, The9 Ltd ADR (NASDAQ:NCTY) which lost 34.40% to settle at 53.510 and Lion Group Holding Ltd (NASDAQ:LGHL) which was down 27.00% to 3.46 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1867 to 1236 and 66 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2307 fell and 925 advanced, while 40 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.90% to 22.77.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.18% or 3.25 to $1805.15 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April rose 0.60% or 0.37 to hit $62.07 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 0.90% or 0.58 to trade at $64.94 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.06% to 1.2147, while USD/JPY rose 0.22% to 105.29.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.15% at 90.138.
