Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Telecoms, Oil & Gas and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Technology, Industrials and Basic Materials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.33% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.05%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.65%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which rose 5.65% or 3.06 points to trade at 57.21 at the close. Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) added 2.85% or 2.65 points to end at 95.78 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) was up 2.23% or 6.15 points to 281.54 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which lost 1.87% or 2.49 points to trade at 130.70 in late trade. American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) declined 1.26% or 1.65 points to end at 129.03 and Honeywell International Inc (NYSE:HON) shed 0.80% or 1.63 points to 201.81.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Nektar Therapeutics (NASDAQ:NKTR) which rose 13.54% to 25.50, Tractor Supply Company (NASDAQ:TSCO) which was up 6.08% to settle at 171.78 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) which gained 5.65% to close at 57.21.
The worst performers were IPG Photonics Corporation (NASDAQ:IPGP) which was down 7.29% to 237.79 in late trade, Henry Schein Inc (NASDAQ:HSIC) which lost 5.10% to settle at 66.98 and TechnipFMC PLC (NYSE:FTI) which was down 4.57% to 7.72 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were CLPS Inc (NASDAQ:CLPS) which rose 153.67% to 12.43, Powerbridge Technologies Co Ltd (NASDAQ:PBTS) which was up 102.80% to settle at 7.97 and NXT-ID Inc (NASDAQ:NXTD) which gained 63.08% to close at 3.1800.
The worst performers were Socket Mobile Inc (NASDAQ:SCKT) which was down 36.17% to 13.200 in late trade, Pyxis Tankers Inc (NASDAQ:PXS) which lost 32.43% to settle at 2.000 and Luokung Technology Corp (NASDAQ:LKCO) which was down 30.00% to 2.100 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1784 to 1291 and 88 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1974 fell and 1202 advanced, while 58 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.33% to 21.39.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 1.42% or 25.60 to $1773.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 1.97% or 1.18 to hit $61.23 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 1.77% or 1.12 to trade at $64.47 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.50% to 1.2044, while USD/JPY fell 0.14% to 105.89.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.46% at 90.915.
