Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Financials and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Technology, Consumer Services and Utilities sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.29% to hit a new 1-month high, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.00%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.43%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which rose 2.35% or 5.07 points to trade at 220.60 at the close. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) added 1.75% or 1.80 points to end at 104.56 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) was up 1.14% or 1.39 points to 123.30 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), which lost 2.27% or 6.56 points to trade at 282.83 in late trade. Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) declined 1.38% or 0.71 points to end at 50.62 and Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) shed 1.36% or 2.60 points to 188.89.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were CarMax Inc (NYSE:KMX) which rose 9.64% to 72.21, Mohawk Industries Inc (NYSE:MHK) which was up 5.70% to settle at 100.12 and CF Industries Holdings Inc (NYSE:CF) which gained 5.22% to close at 77.56.
The worst performers were Signature Bank (OTC:SBNY) which was down 3.40% to 0.14 in late trade, Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) which lost 3.06% to settle at 155.25 and Warner Bros Discovery Inc (NASDAQ:WBD) which was down 3.05% to 14.93 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Innovative Eyewear Inc (NASDAQ:LUCY) which rose 201.37% to 4.40, Brenmiller Energy Ltd (NASDAQ:BNRG) which was up 74.07% to settle at 2.35 and WW International Inc (NASDAQ:WW) which gained 58.98% to close at 6.55.
The worst performers were PLx Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:PLXP) which was down 66.83% to 0.12 in late trade, Professional Diversity Network Inc (NASDAQ:IPDN) which lost 56.13% to settle at 2.90 and GlucoTrack Inc (NASDAQ:GCTK) which was down 38.75% to 1.96 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2200 to 789 and 111 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2080 rose and 1487 declined, while 233 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.69% to 19.10.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.77% or 15.40 to $2,019.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 2.21% or 1.76 to hit $81.50 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 1.67% or 1.41 to trade at $85.59 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.50% to 1.09, while USD/JPY rose 0.08% to 133.71.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.41% at 101.83.
