Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Healthcare, Utilities and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Telecoms, Oil & Gas and Technology sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.25% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index added 0.14%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.10%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which rose 1.59% or 0.82 points to trade at 52.25 at the close. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) added 1.42% or 2.36 points to end at 168.78 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) was up 1.14% or 4.62 points to 410.84 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which lost 1.20% or 2.47 points to trade at 203.66 in late trade. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) declined 0.68% or 0.36 points to end at 52.36 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) shed 0.51% or 0.61 points to 117.95.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Biogen Inc (NASDAQ:BIIB) which rose 9.46% to 258.31, Western Digital Corporation (NASDAQ:WDC) which was up 5.24% to settle at 66.13 and Micron Technology Inc (NASDAQ:MU) which gained 3.48% to close at 96.17.
The worst performers were Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) which was down 3.19% to 148.26 in late trade, American Airlines Group (NASDAQ:AAL) which lost 2.59% to settle at 18.06 and Match Group Inc (NASDAQ:MTCH) which was down 2.21% to 130.00 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Utime Ltd (NASDAQ:UTME) which rose 47.39% to 3.39, Pop Culture Group Co Ltd (NASDAQ:CPOP) which was up 41.13% to settle at 3.26 and Codex DNA Inc (NASDAQ:DNAY) which gained 39.05% to close at 9.33.
The worst performers were Chembio Diagnostics Inc (NASDAQ:CEMI) which was down 30.13% to 1.090 in late trade, Pingtan Marine Enterprise Ltd (NASDAQ:PME) which lost 26.66% to settle at 0.4550 and Applied UV Inc (NASDAQ:AUVI) which was down 25.98% to 2.65 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1771 to 1480 and 149 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2292 fell and 1540 advanced, while 184 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 3.36% to 16.95 a new 1-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.31% or 5.55 to $1805.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 0.80% or 0.61 to hit $76.59 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 0.03% or 0.02 to trade at $79.21 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.03% to 1.1345, while USD/JPY rose 0.02% to 114.96.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.33% at 95.885.
