Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Industrials and Healthcare sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Telecoms, Technology and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.21%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.15%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.81%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE), which rose 3.14% or 1.24 points to trade at 40.77 at the close. United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) added 2.40% or 2.76 points to end at 117.84 and 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) was up 1.94% or 3.75 points to 196.95 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which lost 3.25% or 1.79 points to trade at 53.28 in late trade. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) declined 2.04% or 2.14 points to end at 102.94 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) shed 1.04% or 1.62 points to 154.68.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Pacific Gas & Electric Co (NYSE:PCG) which rose 16.49% to 13.99, Xerox Corp (NYSE:XRX) which was up 11.40% to settle at 27.07 and Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) which gained 11.07% to close at 33.72.
The worst performers were Allergan PLC (NYSE:AGN) which was down 8.55% to 145.12 in late trade, Harley-Davidson Inc (NYSE:HOG) which lost 5.05% to settle at 34.76 and NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) which was down 4.64% to 131.60 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Voyager Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:VYGR) which rose 38.31% to 11.12, Trovagene Inc (NASDAQ:TROV) which was up 26.85% to settle at 0.711 and Zynerba Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ZYNE) which gained 25.26% to close at 4.81.
The worst performers were Research Frontiers Incorporated (NASDAQ:REFR) which was down 16.67% to 2.400 in late trade, Cancer Genetics Inc (NASDAQ:CGIX) which lost 15.75% to settle at 0.260 and TSR Inc (NASDAQ:TSRI) which was down 13.44% to 5.540 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1687 to 1315 and 124 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1507 fell and 1123 advanced, while 83 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.38% to 19.13.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.56% or 7.35 to $1310.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 2.25% or 1.17 to hit $53.16 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 2.02% or 1.21 to trade at $61.02 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.02% to 1.1436, while USD/JPY fell 0.00% to 109.33.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.09% at 95.512.
