Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Financials and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Technology, Consumer Services and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.13%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.46%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 1.25%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which rose 2.89% or 2.21 points to trade at 78.56 at the close. Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) added 2.86% or 1.01 points to end at 36.28 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) was up 2.43% or 3.97 points to 167.46 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which lost 2.95% or 3.41 points to trade at 112.13 in late trade. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) declined 2.68% or 1.37 points to end at 49.70 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) shed 1.79% or 3.73 points to 205.05.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) which rose 10.66% to 6.75, Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:OXY) which was up 8.68% to settle at 11.64 and Diamondback Energy Inc (NASDAQ:FANG) which gained 7.90% to close at 32.91.
The worst performers were Illumina Inc (NASDAQ:ILMN) which was down 8.44% to 322.47 in late trade, BorgWarner Inc (NYSE:BWA) which lost 6.41% to settle at 39.56 and Nextera Energy Inc (NYSE:NEE) which was down 5.19% to 280.35 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Qurate Retail Inc Series B (NASDAQ:QRTEB) which rose 157.86% to 16.40, Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ARWR) which was up 40.33% to settle at 47.43 and Inovio Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:INO) which gained 35.88% to close at 18.52.
The worst performers were China Advanced Construction Materials Group Inc (NASDAQ:HHT) which was down 31.65% to 0.540 in late trade, Cinedigm Corp (NASDAQ:CIDM) which lost 17.52% to settle at 0.6730 and 8i Enterprises Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:JFK) which was down 17.01% to 8.39 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1887 to 1160 and 108 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1702 rose and 1129 declined, while 99 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.76% to 26.04.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.05% or 0.90 to $1967.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 4.94% or 1.89 to hit $40.17 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 0.02% or 0.01 to trade at $42.31 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.03% to 1.1818, while USD/JPY rose 0.02% to 104.97.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.04% at 93.125.
