Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Monday, as gains in the Utilities, Technology and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Basic Materials, Consumer Goods and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.12%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.07%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.11%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which rose 3.95% or 4.22 points to trade at 111.10 at the close. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) added 1.85% or 2.80 points to end at 153.83 and Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO) was up 1.55% or 0.92 points to 60.36 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW), which lost 2.07% or 1.21 points to trade at 57.11 in late trade. Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) declined 1.77% or 0.64 points to end at 35.45 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) shed 1.55% or 0.41 points to 25.99.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Lumen Technologies Inc (NYSE:LUMN) which rose 4.10% to 3.30, Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) which was up 3.95% to settle at 111.10 and Enphase Energy Inc (NASDAQ:ENPH) which gained 3.77% to close at 225.35.
The worst performers were DexCom Inc (NASDAQ:DXCM) which was down 7.87% to 113.25 in late trade, Newell Brands Inc (NASDAQ:NWL) which lost 7.23% to settle at 13.48 and VF Corporation (NYSE:VFC) which was down 5.37% to 24.85 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Appreciate Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:SFR) which rose 152.89% to 3.06, Unicycive Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:UNCY) which was up 153.06% to settle at 1.24 and Bellerophon Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:BLPH) which gained 94.11% to close at 3.51.
The worst performers were Aclaris Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ACRS) which was down 44.68% to 7.07 in late trade, Rubius Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:RUBY) which lost 33.55% to settle at 0.08 and Embark Technology Inc (NASDAQ:EMBK) which was down 32.81% to 2.56 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1981 to 1054 and 109 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2446 fell and 1213 advanced, while 160 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.65% to 18.61.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.11% or 2.05 to $1,852.55 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April rose 1.10% or 0.88 to hit $80.56 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 0.55% or 0.47 to trade at $86.30 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.44% to 1.07, while USD/JPY rose 0.06% to 135.93.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.21% at 104.27.
