Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Telecoms, Oil & Gas and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Technology, Consumer Services and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.11%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.41%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 1.38%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which rose 2.19% or 0.84 points to trade at 39.25 at the close. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) added 1.36% or 3.27 points to end at 243.14 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) was up 1.26% or 2.23 points to 179.63 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which lost 1.86% or 1.64 points to trade at 86.37 in late trade. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) declined 1.39% or 1.83 points to end at 130.03 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) shed 1.02% or 3.54 points to 341.97.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) which rose 4.47% to 84.33, VF Corporation (NYSE:VFC) which was up 4.18% to settle at 27.16 and Las Vegas Sands Corp (NYSE:LVS) which gained 4.17% to close at 48.46.
The worst performers were Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which was down 11.41% to 109.10 in late trade, Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) which lost 9.50% to settle at 180.17 and NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) which was down 7.14% to 141.21 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Elys Game Technology Corp (NASDAQ:ELYS) which rose 111.91% to 0.37, Lightjump Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:LJAQ) which was up 100.00% to settle at 19.00 and Quotient Ltd (NASDAQ:QTNT) which gained 94.74% to close at 0.37.
The worst performers were Tuesday Morning Corp (NASDAQ:TUEM) which was down 46.12% to 0.83 in late trade, Mingzhu Logistics Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:YGMZ) which lost 44.57% to settle at 0.97 and Lion Group Holding Ltd (NASDAQ:LGHL) which was down 36.45% to 0.68 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1701 to 1416 and 85 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2504 fell and 1260 advanced, while 145 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 3.74% to 21.65.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.98% or 17.60 to $1,821.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 0.16% or 0.13 to hit $79.69 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 0.43% or 0.36 to trade at $84.86 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.05% to 1.06, while USD/JPY rose 0.49% to 133.51.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.12% at 103.89.
