Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Oil & Gas and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Utilities, Healthcare and Financials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.11% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.12%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.02%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which rose 2.62% or 1.56 points to trade at 61.21 at the close. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) added 2.05% or 7.20 points to end at 358.29 and Exxon Mobil Corp (NYSE:XOM) was up 1.98% or 1.42 points to 73.09 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE), which lost 1.45% or 0.55 points to trade at 37.48 in late trade. Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) declined 1.44% or 2.58 points to end at 176.37 and Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) shed 1.35% or 0.72 points to 52.42.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Kroger Company (NYSE:KR) which rose 11.36% to 27.83, International Flavors & Fragrances Inc (NYSE:IFF) which was up 8.43% to settle at 134.46 and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:REGN) which gained 6.93% to close at 332.60.
The worst performers were Mylan NV (NASDAQ:MYL) which was down 9.88% to 17.79 in late trade, Becton Dickinson and Company (NYSE:BDX) which lost 5.38% to settle at 246.68 and Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:OXY) which was down 5.25% to 41.91 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were NextCure Inc (NASDAQ:NXTC) which rose 248.92% to 92.22, Sellas Life Sciences Group Inc (NASDAQ:SLS) which was up 44.88% to settle at 0.2050 and Fulgent Genetics Inc (NASDAQ:FLGT) which gained 38.40% to close at 13.01.
The worst performers were Myriad Genetics Inc (NASDAQ:MYGN) which was down 40.37% to 20.93 in late trade, Neuronetics Inc (NASDAQ:STIM) which lost 39.13% to settle at 5.46 and Strongbridge Biopharma plc (NASDAQ:SBBP) which was down 34.30% to 1.5900 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1466 to 1384 and 94 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1394 rose and 1227 declined, while 101 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 2.10% to 13.10.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 1.73% or 26.15 to $1484.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 1.29% or 0.73 to hit $57.27 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 1.30% or 0.81 to trade at $62.94 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.00% to 1.1074, while USD/JPY rose 0.00% to 109.16.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.40% at 97.752.
