Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Telecoms, Basic Materials and Financials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Technology, Consumer Services and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.06%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.69%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 1.88%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which rose 1.40% or 5.67 points to trade at 411.57 at the close. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) added 2.66% or 1.72 points to end at 66.27 and The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) was up 1.20% or 1.88 points to 158.47 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which lost 3.47% or 4.60 points to trade at 127.94 in late trade. Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM) declined 2.91% or 6.51 points to end at 217.25 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) shed 0.63% or 1.49 points to 233.70.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Arconic Corp (NYSE:ARNC) which rose 19.21% to 35.00, Gartner Inc (NYSE:IT) which was up 14.28% to settle at 225.60 and Sealed Air Corporation (NYSE:SEE) which gained 9.49% to close at 54.91.
The worst performers were IPG Photonics Corporation (NASDAQ:IPGP) which was down 10.46% to 189.45 in late trade, Align Technology Inc (NASDAQ:ALGN) which lost 2.96% to settle at 582.03 and Western Digital Corporation (NASDAQ:WDC) which was down 4.02% to 67.30 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Cocrystal Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:COCP) which rose 71.77% to 2.1300, BioLineRx Ltd (NASDAQ:BLRX) which was up 52.35% to settle at 4.860 and Neuronetics Inc (NASDAQ:STIM) which gained 39.41% to close at 14.15.
The worst performers were ChemoCentryx Inc (NASDAQ:CCXI) which was down 45.43% to 26.64 in late trade, Sequential Brands Group Inc (NASDAQ:SQBG) which lost 37.66% to settle at 17.0200 and Image Sensing Systems Inc (NASDAQ:ISNS) which was down 23.96% to 8.60 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1871 to 1284 and 103 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2481 fell and 831 advanced, while 112 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 6.39% to 19.48 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.69% or 12.45 to $1779.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 2.05% or 1.32 to hit $65.81 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 2.09% or 1.41 to trade at $68.97 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.35% to 1.2019, while USD/JPY rose 0.20% to 109.28.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.36% at 91.252.
