Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Monday, as gains in the Consumer Goods, Financials and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Healthcare, Telecoms and Basic Materials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.06%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.01%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.06%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were American Express Company (NYSE:AXP), which rose 1.23% or 1.44 points to trade at 118.24 at the close. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) added 1.17% or 1.01 points to end at 87.69 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) was up 1.03% or 2.15 points to 211.54 in late trade.
Biggest losers included UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which lost 1.77% or 4.12 points to trade at 228.77 in late trade. Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) declined 1.24% or 0.68 points to end at 54.32 and Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) shed 1.23% or 0.45 points to 36.24.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Ulta Beauty Inc (NASDAQ:ULTA) which rose 3.74% to 237.31, Advance Auto Parts Inc (NYSE:AAP) which was up 3.55% to settle at 161.22 and CenturyLink Inc (NYSE:CTL) which gained 3.19% to close at 12.92.
The worst performers were Incyte Corporation (NASDAQ:INCY) which was down 4.40% to 77.64 in late trade, Take-Two Interactive Software Inc (NASDAQ:TTWO) which lost 3.70% to settle at 125.73 and ABIOMED Inc (NASDAQ:ABMD) which was down 3.50% to 186.01 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Avadel Pharmaceuticals PLC (NASDAQ:AVDL) which rose 32.64% to 4.47, Arotech Corporation (NASDAQ:ARTX) which was up 30.53% to settle at 2.950 and Melinta Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:MLNT) which gained 22.44% to close at 3.820.
The worst performers were Plus Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:PSTV) which was down 49.50% to 4.0500 in late trade, Reebonz Holding Ltd (NASDAQ:RBZ) which lost 38.76% to settle at 1.58 and Onconova Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ONTX) which was down 28.12% to 1.1500 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1532 to 1348 and 95 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1474 fell and 1172 advanced, while 82 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.68% to 14.91.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.95% or 14.45 to $1529.55 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 0.65% or 0.38 to hit $58.47 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 0.15% or 0.10 to trade at $64.42 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.02% to 1.0994, while USD/JPY rose 0.00% to 107.55.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.12% at 98.255.
