Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Industrials, Technology and Financials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.03% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.03%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.21%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD), which rose 1.90% or 4.03 points to trade at 215.61 at the close. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) added 1.89% or 6.13 points to end at 330.47 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) was up 1.63% or 3.46 points to 215.41 in late trade.
Biggest losers included American Express Company (NYSE:AXP), which lost 1.32% or 1.69 points to trade at 126.30 in late trade. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) declined 1.05% or 0.60 points to end at 56.75 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) shed 0.98% or 1.87 points to 188.13.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Hanesbrands Inc (NYSE:HBI) which rose 23.78% to 19.78, Gartner Inc (NYSE:IT) which was up 9.52% to settle at 184.12 and Affiliated Managers Group Inc (NYSE:AMG) which gained 7.89% to close at 142.52.
The worst performers were Coty Inc (NYSE:COTY) which was down 14.86% to 6.76 in late trade, TechnipFMC PLC (NYSE:FTI) which lost 7.16% to settle at 9.86 and Jack Henry & Associates Inc (NASDAQ:JKHY) which was down 7.19% to 146.84 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Applied UV Inc (NASDAQ:AUVI) which rose 370.66% to 24.38, Kalvista Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:KALV) which was up 116.34% to settle at 33.77 and Comstock Holding Companies Inc (NASDAQ:CHCI) which gained 91.94% to close at 8.100.
The worst performers were Big Rock Partners Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:BRPA) which was down 32.48% to 40.00 in late trade, AEterna Zentaris Inc (NASDAQ:AEZS) which lost 30.84% to settle at 2.310 and Ekso Bionics Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:EKSO) which was down 22.34% to 10.1500 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1697 to 1327 and 70 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1770 rose and 1338 declined, while 62 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.33% to 21.31.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.15% or 2.75 to $1836.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 0.71% or 0.41 to hit $58.38 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 0.76% or 0.46 to trade at $61.16 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.57% to 1.2117, while USD/JPY fell 0.61% to 104.58.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.56% at 90.438.
