Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Utilities, Telecoms and Healthcare sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Consumer Goods, Technology and Oil & Gas sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.02%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.03%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.29%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV), which rose 2.42% or 3.15 points to trade at 133.17 at the close. General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) added 1.99% or 0.46 points to end at 23.58 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) was up 1.15% or 0.56 points to 49.21 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which lost 2.37% or 3.78 points to trade at 155.98 in late trade. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) declined 0.96% or 1.98 points to end at 203.25 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) shed 0.84% or 2.04 points to 239.99.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Adobe Systems Incorporated (NASDAQ:ADBE) which rose 12.24% to 171.73, Envision Healthcare Corp (NYSE:EVHC) which was up 10.90% to settle at 45.08 and Danaher Corporation (NYSE:DHR) which gained 4.71% to close at 90.10.
The worst performers were United Continental Holdings Inc (NYSE:UAL) which was down 12.08% to 59.78 in late trade, Genuine Parts Company (NYSE:GPC) which lost 8.50% to settle at 89.71 and Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co (NYSE:HPE) which was down 5.71% to 13.86 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Uniqure NV (NASDAQ:QURE) which rose 60.08% to 15.16, Imprimis Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:IMMY) which was up 28.77% to settle at 1.880 and Aevi Genomic Medicine Inc (NASDAQ:GNMX) which gained 25.78% to close at 1.610.
The worst performers were Immune Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:IMNP) which was down 37.42% to 0.9450 in late trade, Ocean Power Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:OPTT) which lost 33.50% to settle at 1.330 and Dextera Surgical Inc (NASDAQ:DXTR) which was down 23.05% to 0.1329 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1544 to 1507 and 162 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1401 fell and 1113 advanced, while 132 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.10% to 10.08.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.76% or 9.69 to $1292.69 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 1.21% or 0.63 to hit $51.41 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 1.58% or 0.92 to trade at $57.23 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.56% to 1.1853, while USD/JPY fell 0.40% to 112.49.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.35% at 92.97.
