Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Friday, as gains in the Technology, Consumer Services and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Telecoms and Utilities sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.82%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.22%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 1.22%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which rose 2.43% or 2.94 points to trade at 123.93 at the close. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) added 2.29% or 5.24 points to end at 234.23 and UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) was up 1.59% or 5.22 points to 334.09 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM), which lost 5.32% or 12.29 points to trade at 218.78 in late trade. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) declined 2.35% or 1.44 points to end at 59.91 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) shed 2.34% or 2.86 points to 119.61.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were TripAdvisor Inc (NASDAQ:TRIP) which rose 13.00% to 49.20, Alliance Data Systems Corp (NYSE:ADS) which was up 5.71% to settle at 97.05 and L Brands Inc (NYSE:LB) which gained 5.21% to close at 55.09.
The worst performers were Foot Locker Inc (NYSE:FL) which was down 8.02% to 48.50 in late trade, EOG Resources Inc (NYSE:EOG) which lost 7.88% to settle at 65.03 and Universal Health Services Inc (NYSE:UHS) which was down 5.49% to 127.51 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Lixte Biotechnology Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:LIXT) which rose 50.66% to 5.68, Ocugen, Inc (NASDAQ:OCGN) which was up 34.12% to settle at 10.7300 and Intrusion Inc (NASDAQ:INTZ) which gained 31.81% to close at 24.74.
The worst performers were Recro Pharm (NASDAQ:REPH) which was down 31.57% to 3.36 in late trade, Tricida Inc (NASDAQ:TCDA) which lost 29.82% to settle at 5.17 and Guardion Health Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:GHSI) which was down 25.56% to 0.5172 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1720 to 1382 and 68 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1814 fell and 1376 advanced, while 66 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 7.13% to 26.83.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 2.70% or 47.85 to $1727.55 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April fell 3.02% or 1.92 to hit $61.61 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 2.50% or 1.65 to trade at $64.46 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.83% to 1.2074, while USD/JPY rose 0.34% to 106.57.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.86% at 90.910.
