Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Technology, Consumer Goods and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Healthcare and Basic Materials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.68%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.08%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.39%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which rose 5.69% or 6.08 points to trade at 112.86 at the close. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) added 4.92% or 1.67 points to end at 35.58 and Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) was up 1.01% or 1.57 points to 156.87 in late trade.
Biggest losers included UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which lost 6.40% or 31.45 points to trade at 459.86 in late trade. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) declined 1.58% or 3.48 points to end at 216.90 and The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) shed 1.46% or 2.57 points to 173.55.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) which rose 5.69% to 112.86, Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) which was up 4.92% to settle at 35.58 and NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) which gained 4.81% to close at 429.97.
The worst performers were Humana Inc (NYSE:HUM) which was down 11.24% to 455.00 in late trade, CVS Health Corp (NYSE:CVS) which lost 7.76% to settle at 66.65 and Centene Corp (NYSE:CNC) which was down 6.94% to 64.65 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were DatChat Inc (NASDAQ:DATS) which rose 89.84% to 0.82, WeTrade Group Inc (NASDAQ:WETG) which was up 70.73% to settle at 14.41 and Blue Water Vaccines Inc (NASDAQ:BWV) which gained 62.03% to close at 1.28.
The worst performers were Tenon Medical Inc (NASDAQ:TNON) which was down 52.91% to 0.29 in late trade, Advanced Human Imaging Ltd ADR (NASDAQ:AHI) which lost 41.33% to settle at 0.88 and IperionX Limited ADR (NASDAQ:IPX) which was down 36.11% to 8.44 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1819 to 1164 and 102 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2308 fell and 1226 advanced, while 152 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 5.00% to 13.88.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.07% or 1.35 to $1,957.25 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 1.14% or 0.79 to hit $68.63 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 1.02% or 0.76 to trade at $73.53 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.37% to 1.08, while USD/JPY fell 0.17% to 139.98.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.37% at 102.55.
