Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Monday, as gains in the Consumer Goods, Technology and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Telecoms sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.62%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.44%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.50%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD), which rose 2.02% or 4.19 points to trade at 211.95 at the close. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) added 1.45% or 0.72 points to end at 50.45 and Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) was up 0.83% or 1.89 points to 229.29 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which lost 3.68% or 6.47 points to trade at 169.25 in late trade. Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) declined 3.29% or 3.04 points to end at 89.41 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) shed 2.59% or 3.96 points to 148.99.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Alexion Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ALXN) which rose 29.24% to 156.35, Incyte Corporation (NASDAQ:INCY) which was up 6.81% to settle at 86.84 and Nektar Therapeutics (NASDAQ:NKTR) which gained 5.17% to close at 17.61.
The worst performers were Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:OXY) which was down 8.28% to 19.16 in late trade, Macy’s Inc (NYSE:M) which lost 6.68% to settle at 10.34 and Diamondback Energy Inc (NASDAQ:FANG) which was down 6.29% to 46.96 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Arvinas Inc (NASDAQ:ARVN) which rose 94.92% to 58.34, Biocardia Inc (NASDAQ:BCDA) which was up 62.41% to settle at 4.58 and Veru Inc (NASDAQ:VERU) which gained 52.64% to close at 9.70.
The worst performers were Aerpio Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ARPO) which was down 45.78% to 1.2200 in late trade, Fossil Group Inc (NASDAQ:FOSL) which lost 27.31% to settle at 9.66 and Sellas Life Sciences Group Inc (NASDAQ:SLS) which was down 20.43% to 6.66 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1934 to 1152 and 90 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1518 rose and 1491 declined, while 75 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 6.05% to 24.72 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.62% or 11.35 to $1832.25 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 0.92% or 0.43 to hit $47.00 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 0.66% or 0.33 to trade at $50.30 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.31% to 1.2148, while USD/JPY fell 0.00% to 104.00.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.31% at 90.645.
