Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Monday, as gains in the Utilities, Technology and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Industrials, Healthcare and Financials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.62%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.13%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.36%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were General Electric Company (NYSE:GE), which rose 1.07% or 0.16 points to trade at 15.10 at the close. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) added 0.99% or 2.67 points to end at 273.44 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) was up 0.97% or 1.74 points to 181.72 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which lost 2.90% or 10.29 points to trade at 344.23 in late trade. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) declined 2.35% or 3.72 points to end at 154.53 and United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) shed 1.91% or 2.56 points to 131.51.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Micron Technology Inc (NASDAQ:MU) which rose 8.76% to 59.37, Newell Brands Inc (NYSE:NWL) which was up 6.15% to settle at 29.00 and Broadcom Ltd (NASDAQ:AVGO) which gained 3.57% to close at 262.84.
The worst performers were Cooper Companies Inc (NYSE:COO) which was down 4.13% to 241.04 in late trade, HP Inc (NYSE:HPQ) which lost 3.31% to settle at 23.84 and Cigna Corporation (NYSE:CI) which was down 3.16% to 167.89 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Marathon Patent Group Inc (NASDAQ:MARA) which rose 58.82% to 2.430, Net Element Inc (NASDAQ:NETE) which was up 31.20% to settle at 13.5000 and Innovate Biopharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:INNT) which gained 27.52% to close at 19.00.
The worst performers were Anthera Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ANTH) which was down 80.87% to 0.505 in late trade, Orexigen Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:OREX) which lost 76.42% to settle at 0.330 and Sino-Global Shipping America Ltd (NASDAQ:SINO) which was down 34.30% to 1.1300 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1712 to 1424 and 35 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1459 rose and 1055 declined, while 142 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 7.92% to 15.80.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.02% or 0.20 to $1323.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April fell 1.08% or 0.67 to hit $61.37 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 0.79% or 0.52 to trade at $64.97 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.24% to 1.2338, while USD/JPY fell 0.38% to 106.40.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.26% at 89.88.
