Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Technology, Healthcare and Oil & Gas sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Consumer Goods, Financials and Basic Materials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.41%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.27%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.09%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO), which rose 1.89% or 0.90 points to trade at 48.40 at the close. McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) added 0.99% or 1.72 points to end at 175.87 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) was up 0.67% or 0.34 points to 50.81 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO), which lost 8.44% or 4.20 points to trade at 45.59 in late trade. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) declined 1.61% or 3.35 points to end at 204.93 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) shed 1.11% or 2.16 points to 192.53.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Marathon Oil Corporation (NYSE:MRO) which rose 8.75% to 16.91, Equinix Inc (NASDAQ:EQIX) which was up 7.32% to settle at 420.59 and Vulcan Materials Company (NYSE:VMC) which gained 6.42% to close at 112.69.
The worst performers were CenturyLink Inc (NYSE:CTL) which was down 13.06% to 12.78 in late trade, American International Group Inc (NYSE:AIG) which lost 9.03% to settle at 40.19 and International Flavors & Fragrances Inc (NYSE:IFF) which was down 8.65% to 132.66 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Arcimoto Inc (NASDAQ:FUV) which rose 108.82% to 7.10, iFresh Inc (NASDAQ:IFMK) which was up 31.78% to settle at 1.41 and Draper Oakwood Technology Acquisition Inc Class A (NASDAQ:RBZ) which gained 30.38% to close at 1.70.
The worst performers were Motif Bio PLC (NASDAQ:MTFB) which was down 72.89% to 2.81 in late trade, Phunware Inc (NASDAQ:PHUN) which lost 47.63% to settle at 50.20 and Puhui Wealth Investment Management Co Ltd (NASDAQ:PHCF) which was down 29.65% to 3.4400 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1593 to 1422 and 94 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1373 fell and 1263 advanced, while 92 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 3.64% to 16.22.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.03% or 0.35 to $1315.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 1.11% or 0.60 to hit $54.50 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 1.59% or 1.01 to trade at $64.62 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.23% to 1.1291, while USD/JPY fell 0.42% to 110.53.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.06% at 96.875.
