Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Technology, Financials and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Telecoms, Oil & Gas and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.27%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.25%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.91%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 3.31% or 1.71 points to trade at 53.33 at the close. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) added 2.32% or 3.84 points to end at 169.10 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) was up 1.58% or 1.48 points to 95.00 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE), which lost 3.31% or 1.21 points to trade at 35.40 in late trade. McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) declined 2.39% or 4.00 points to end at 163.44 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) shed 1.51% or 0.89 points to 57.98.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were IPG Photonics Corporation (NASDAQ:IPGP) which rose 9.51% to 233.29, Qorvo Inc (NASDAQ:QRVO) which was up 6.53% to settle at 71.80 and Johnson Controls International PLC (NYSE:JCI) which gained 6.11% to close at 35.94.
The worst performers were Tapestry Inc (NYSE:TPR) which was down 11.74% to 47.46 in late trade, Seagate Technology PLC (NASDAQ:STX) which lost 6.36% to settle at 54.21 and Mattel Inc (NASDAQ:MAT) which was down 5.00% to 14.06 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Heat Biologics Inc (NASDAQ:HTBX) which rose 94.86% to 4.170, VIVUS Inc (NASDAQ:VVUS) which was up 46.68% to settle at 0.539 and Reading International B Inc (NASDAQ:RDIB) which gained 38.30% to close at 28.490.
The worst performers were Commscope Hlding (NASDAQ:COMM) which was down 27.81% to 27.59 in late trade, Intevac Inc (NASDAQ:IVAC) which lost 27.10% to settle at 4.775 and Match Group Inc (NASDAQ:MTCH) which was down 22.09% to 36.7100 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1636 to 1420 and 131 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1572 rose and 958 declined, while 139 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.82% to 15.48.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 1.05% or 13.80 to $1305.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 1.59% or 1.09 to hit $67.48 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 1.79% or 1.34 to trade at $73.35 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.64% to 1.1994, while USD/JPY rose 0.47% to 109.81.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.70% at 92.27.
