Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Friday, as gains in the Technology, Consumer Services and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Consumer Goods and Healthcare sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.14%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.57%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 1.25%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 1.91% or 0.81 points to trade at 43.31 at the close. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) added 1.56% or 6.44 points to end at 420.55 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) was up 1.07% or 1.97 points to 186.33 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which lost 1.97% or 3.04 points to trade at 151.02 in late trade. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) declined 1.96% or 2.17 points to end at 108.37 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) shed 1.59% or 5.11 points to 316.89.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Applied Materials Inc (NASDAQ:AMAT) which rose 6.87% to 185.84, First Solar Inc (NASDAQ:FSLR) which was up 5.82% to settle at 151.50 and Lam Research Corp (NASDAQ:LRCX) which gained 5.46% to close at 911.58.
The worst performers were Expedia Inc (NASDAQ:EXPE) which was down 17.78% to 131.11 in late trade, Take-Two Interactive Software Inc (NASDAQ:TTWO) which lost 8.66% to settle at 154.91 and Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) which was down 6.67% to 87.41 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Intelligent Bio Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:INBS) which rose 134.90% to 6.76, NanoString Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:NSTG) which was up 97.93% to settle at 0.23 and Sunworks Inc (NASDAQ:SUNW) which gained 87.87% to close at 0.10.
The worst performers were Synlogic Inc (NASDAQ:SYBX) which was down 48.70% to 1.77 in late trade, BioXcel Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:BTAI) which lost 43.73% to settle at 2.11 and Jin Medical International Ltd (NASDAQ:ZJYL) which was down 42.44% to 7.46 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1868 to 987 and 77 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2408 rose and 1003 declined, while 129 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.09% to 12.93.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.42% or 8.55 to $2,039.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 0.41% or 0.31 to hit $76.53 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 0.34% or 0.28 to trade at $81.91 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.11% to 1.08, while USD/JPY fell 0.04% to 149.26.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.10% at 103.93.
