Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Utilities, Oil & Gas and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Industrials, Consumer Services and Financials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.10%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.04%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.05%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 1.13% or 3.68 points to trade at 330.68 at the close. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) added 0.92% or 0.92 points to end at 100.57 and UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) was up 0.84% or 2.43 points to 292.90 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT), which lost 1.17% or 1.42 points to trade at 119.86 in late trade. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) declined 1.04% or 1.30 points to end at 124.01 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) shed 1.02% or 0.63 points to 60.86.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Foot Locker Inc (NYSE:FL) which rose 5.07% to 40.19, Corteva Inc (NYSE:CTVA) which was up 3.92% to settle at 27.8200 and Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) which gained 3.90% to close at 138.71.
The worst performers were FedEx Corporation (NYSE:FDX) which was down 10.03% to 146.86 in late trade, Unum Group (NYSE:UNM) which lost 2.92% to settle at 29.62 and Ulta Beauty Inc (NASDAQ:ULTA) which was down 2.30% to 250.07 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Mirum Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:MIRM) which rose 44.09% to 23.76, TSR Inc (NASDAQ:TSRI) which was up 40.96% to settle at 3.729 and Reed’s Inc (NASDAQ:REED) which gained 30.35% to close at 1.030.
The worst performers were Trans World Entertainment Corp (NASDAQ:TWMC) which was down 29.58% to 2.200 in late trade, PLx Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:PLXP) which lost 28.51% to settle at 3.36 and Akorn Inc (NASDAQ:AKRX) which was down 27.72% to 2.19 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1702 to 1123 and 97 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1335 fell and 1319 advanced, while 92 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 2.36% to 12.58.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.08% or 1.15 to $1479.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 0.11% or 0.07 to hit $60.80 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 0.03% or 0.02 to trade at $66.12 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.03% to 1.1114, while USD/JPY rose 0.03% to 109.56.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.20% at 96.975.
