Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Consumer Goods and Technology sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Financials and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.09%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.08%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.38%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which rose 2.00% or 1.03 points to trade at 52.48 at the close. Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) added 1.74% or 0.91 points to end at 53.18 and Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) was up 1.65% or 2.84 points to 175.32 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which lost 4.94% or 7.01 points to trade at 134.86 in late trade. JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) declined 2.17% or 2.40 points to end at 108.03 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) shed 1.15% or 1.62 points to 139.11.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Fleetcor Technologies Inc (NYSE:FLT) which rose 8.20% to 291.33, Assurant Inc (NYSE:AIZ) which was up 7.53% to settle at 117.89 and CVS Health Corp (NYSE:CVS) which gained 7.45% to close at 58.12.
The worst performers were ABIOMED Inc (NASDAQ:ABMD) which was down 5.26% to 189.93 in late trade, Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) which lost 4.94% to settle at 134.86 and SVB Financial Group (NASDAQ:SIVB) which was down 4.71% to 197.32 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Aevi Genomic Medicine Inc (NASDAQ:GNMX) which rose 44.88% to 0.235, Weight Watchers International Inc (NASDAQ:WW) which was up 42.65% to settle at 29.97 and Paratek Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:PRTK) which gained 34.95% to close at 4.17.
The worst performers were Rexahn Pharmaceuticals Inc (NYSE:REXN) which was down 46.50% to 2.600 in late trade, Comscore Inc (NASDAQ:SCOR) which lost 33.11% to settle at 2.02 and Professional Diversity Network Inc (NASDAQ:IPDN) which was down 29.31% to 1.2300 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1559 to 1407 and 103 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1419 fell and 1254 advanced, while 80 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 3.37% to 19.49.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 1.96% or 29.05 to $1513.25 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 2.41% or 1.29 to hit $52.34 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 0.14% or 0.08 to trade at $57.41 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.05% to 1.1203, while USD/JPY fell 0.00% to 106.25.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.03% at 97.445.
