Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Telecoms and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Utilities, Oil & Gas and Financials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.06%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.07%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.41%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were DowDuPont Inc (NYSE:DWDP), which rose 1.13% or 0.76 points to trade at 67.89 at the close. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) added 0.77% or 1.48 points to end at 193.31 and General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) was up 0.66% or 0.09 points to 13.80 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which lost 1.02% or 0.63 points to trade at 61.39 in late trade. Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) declined 0.94% or 0.80 points to end at 84.62 and Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) shed 0.87% or 0.38 points to 43.11.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Macy’s Inc (NYSE:M) which rose 7.95% to 40.05, Gap Inc (NYSE:GPS) which was up 6.82% to settle at 31.18 and Michael Kors Holdings Limited (NYSE:KORS) which gained 4.90% to close at 63.53.
The worst performers were Carnival Corporation (NYSE:CCL) which was down 4.34% to 60.59 in late trade, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NYSE:NCLH) which lost 4.21% to settle at 50.800 and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (NYSE:RCL) which was down 4.09% to 102.15 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Ameri Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:AMRH) which rose 92.52% to 1.55, SenesTech Inc (NASDAQ:SNES) which was up 35.04% to settle at 1.85 and Cherokee Inc (NASDAQ:CHKE) which gained 34.18% to close at 1.06.
The worst performers were Vaxart Inc (NASDAQ:VXRT) which was down 23.83% to 3.260 in late trade, Tarena Intl Adr (NASDAQ:TEDU) which lost 22.13% to settle at 7.39 and Radio One Inc (NASDAQ:UONE) which was down 16.67% to 2.250 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1799 to 1266 and 129 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1640 rose and 902 declined, while 135 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.04% to 12.48 a new 3-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.28% or 3.60 to $1300.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 0.97% or 0.63 to hit $65.38 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 0.39% or 0.29 to trade at $75.00 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.15% to 1.1716, while USD/JPY fell 0.03% to 109.78.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.17% at 93.86.
