Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Friday, as gains in the Telecoms, Utilities and Healthcare sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Technology sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.05%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.11%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.02%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which rose 3.64% or 1.81 points to trade at 51.57 at the close. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) added 2.22% or 1.51 points to end at 69.56 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) was up 1.93% or 2.40 points to 126.62 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Exxon Mobil Corp (NYSE:XOM), which lost 3.80% or 3.07 points to trade at 77.79 in late trade. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) declined 1.16% or 1.90 points to end at 162.32 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) shed 1.09% or 1.59 points to 144.72.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Ventas Inc (NYSE:VTR) which rose 8.68% to 51.59, Expedia Inc (NASDAQ:EXPE) which was up 8.20% to settle at 115.07 and Welltower Inc (NYSE:WELL) which gained 5.74% to close at 52.88.
The worst performers were Charter Communications Inc (NASDAQ:CHTR) which was down 11.68% to 263.33 in late trade, Western Digital Corporation (NASDAQ:WDC) which lost 8.00% to settle at 80.88 and DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ:DISH) which was down 5.62% to 34.74 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were FC Global Realty Inc (NASDAQ:FCRE) which rose 58.67% to 1.1899, Genprex Inc (NASDAQ:GNPX) which was up 38.27% to settle at 15.2100 and Dmc Global Inc (NASDAQ:BOOM) which gained 24.33% to close at 39.35.
The worst performers were Haymaker Acquisition Corp Class A (NASDAQ:HYAC) which was up 0.62% to 9.6800 in late trade, Flex Ltd (NASDAQ:FLEX) which lost 21.69% to settle at 13.03 and National Instruments Corporation (NASDAQ:NATI) which was down 20.11% to 39.45 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1761 to 1307 and 121 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1288 rose and 1252 declined, while 133 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 4.93% to 15.44.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.50% or 6.60 to $1324.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 0.23% or 0.16 to hit $68.03 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 0.40% or 0.30 to trade at $74.44 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.21% to 1.2130, while USD/JPY fell 0.19% to 109.09.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.08% at 91.32.
