Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Technology, Consumer Services and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Telecoms, Healthcare and Financials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.01% to hit a new 1-month low, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.74%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 1.68%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which rose 4.33% or 7.26 points to trade at 175.04 at the close. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) added 3.36% or 2.99 points to end at 91.99 and Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) was up 1.67% or 3.10 points to 189.05 in late trade.
Biggest losers included UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which lost 1.86% or 8.36 points to trade at 441.69 in late trade. The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) declined 1.78% or 4.00 points to end at 220.38 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) shed 0.95% or 1.42 points to 148.78.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Paramount Global Class B (NASDAQ:PARA) which rose 7.33% to 11.27, Broadcom Inc (NASDAQ:AVGO) which was up 4.54% to settle at 1,382.46 and Micron Technology Inc (NASDAQ:MU) which gained 4.35% to close at 127.51.
The worst performers were Globe Life Inc (NYSE:GL) which was down 53.16% to 49.15 in late trade, CarMax Inc (NYSE:KMX) which lost 9.23% to settle at 71.98 and Fastenal Company (NASDAQ:FAST) which was down 6.50% to 69.88 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Rent the Runway Inc (NASDAQ:RENT) which rose 161.89% to 19.38, Rallybio Corp (NASDAQ:RLYB) which was up 82.82% to settle at 2.98 and Monogram Orthopaedics Inc (NASDAQ:MGRM) which gained 79.30% to close at 4.07.
The worst performers were Aptevo Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:APVO) which was down 60.08% to 0.96 in late trade, Nano Labs Ltd ADR (NASDAQ:NA) which lost 54.23% to settle at 0.88 and Enlivex Therapeutics Ltd (NASDAQ:ENLV) which was down 54.02% to 1.83 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1496 to 1351 and 75 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1824 rose and 1538 declined, while 120 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 5.63% to 14.91.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 1.93% or 45.25 to $2,393.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 0.72% or 0.62 to hit $85.59 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 0.31% or 0.28 to trade at $90.20 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.15% to 1.07, while USD/JPY rose 0.06% to 153.26.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.04% at 105.07.
