Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Utilities, Technology and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Basic Materials, Oil & Gas and Industrials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.00%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.31%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.48%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 7.66% or 4.08 points to trade at 57.32 at the close. Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) added 2.17% or 1.04 points to end at 49.00 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) was up 1.57% or 2.02 points to 130.82 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW), which lost 2.08% or 1.27 points to trade at 59.77 in late trade. International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) declined 2.07% or 2.68 points to end at 126.53 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) shed 1.57% or 2.27 points to 142.78.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Macerich Company (NYSE:MAC) which rose 7.44% to 12.85, Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) which was up 7.66% to settle at 57.32 and Cooper Companies Inc (NYSE:COO) which gained 6.23% to close at 380.31.
The worst performers were TechnipFMC PLC (NYSE:FTI) which was down 6.55% to 11.99 in late trade, Helmerich and Payne Inc (NYSE:HP) which lost 5.19% to settle at 25.02 and Gap Inc (NYSE:GPS) which was down 4.29% to 22.30 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Live Ventures Inc (NASDAQ:LIVE) which rose 85.80% to 23.23, Foresight Autonomous Holdings Ltd ADR (NASDAQ:FRSX) which was up 69.27% to settle at 6.940 and Cassava Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:SAVA) which gained 48.04% to close at 12.11.
The worst performers were Asia Pacific Wire & Cable Corp Ltd (NASDAQ:APWC) which was down 21.75% to 3.760 in late trade, Acutus Medical Inc (NASDAQ:AFIB) which lost 17.18% to settle at 28.16 and Provention Bio Inc (NASDAQ:PRVB) which was down 14.55% to 16.62 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1577 to 1523 and 63 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1813 fell and 1235 advanced, while 67 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 4.50% to 22.28.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.49% or 9.10 to $1853.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 0.66% or 0.35 to hit $52.86 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 0.99% or 0.56 to trade at $56.02 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.41% to 1.2156, while USD/JPY rose 0.11% to 103.86.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.28% at 90.317.
