Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Healthcare, Technology and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Telecoms, Oil & Gas and Financials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.00% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index added 0.16%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.26%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which rose 1.35% or 1.84 points to trade at 138.58 at the close. Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) added 1.01% or 0.84 points to end at 84.12 and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) was up 0.76% or 0.47 points to 62.72 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Exxon Mobil Corp (NYSE:XOM), which lost 1.38% or 0.97 points to trade at 69.37 in late trade. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) declined 1.16% or 0.65 points to end at 55.16 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) shed 1.12% or 1.66 points to 146.34.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were DXC Technology Co (NYSE:DXC) which rose 19.90% to 35.25, Rockwell Automation Inc (NYSE:ROK) which was up 10.50% to settle at 198.01 and Tyson Foods Inc (NYSE:TSN) which gained 7.43% to close at 88.88.
The worst performers were Advance Auto Parts Inc (NYSE:AAP) which was down 7.51% to 156.14 in late trade, Viacom B Inc (NASDAQ:VIAB) which lost 3.82% to settle at 22.55 and CBS Corporation (NYSE:CBS) which was down 3.62% to 37.76 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Applied DNA Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:APDN) which rose 331.82% to 19.000, Craft Brew Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:BREW) which was up 121.42% to settle at 16.23 and Estre USA Inc Class A (NASDAQ:ESTR) which gained 31.21% to close at 0.28.
The worst performers were Solid Biosciences LLC (NASDAQ:SLDB) which was down 74.36% to 2.82 in late trade, Fluent Inc (NASDAQ:FLNT) which lost 33.86% to settle at 1.68 and T2 Biosystms Inc (NASDAQ:TTOO) which was down 27.51% to 1.95 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1516 to 1303 and 112 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1331 fell and 1300 advanced, while 70 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.08% to 12.68.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.00% or 0.05 to $1457.05 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 0.14% or 0.08 to hit $56.78 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 0.24% or 0.15 to trade at $62.03 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.03% to 1.1010, while USD/JPY fell 0.01% to 108.98.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.18% at 98.210.
