Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Monday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Utilities and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Healthcare, Consumer Services and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.10%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.04%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.24%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which rose 0.54% or 0.60 points to trade at 111.52 at the close. E I du Pont de Nemours & Co (NYSE:DD) added 0.46% or 0.37 points to end at 81.23 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) was up 0.43% or 0.24 points to 56.67 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 2.09% or 0.75 points to trade at 35.16 in late trade. Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) declined 1.50% or 0.98 points to end at 64.15 and General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) shed 1.39% or 0.42 points to 29.86.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Citrix Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CTXS) which rose 6.79% to 84.93, Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) which was up 4.77% to settle at 104.30 and Delphi Automotive plc (NYSE:DLPH) which gained 4.03% to close at 80.20.
The worst performers were Urban Outfitters Inc (NASDAQ:URBN) which was down 3.81% to 24.21 in late trade, American Airlines Group (NASDAQ:AAL) which lost 3.49% to settle at 42.37 and United Continental Holdings Inc (NYSE:UAL) which was down 3.44% to 69.85 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Innocoll AG (NASDAQ:INNL) which rose 108.31% to 1.6600, Cerulean Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:CERU) which was up 63.82% to settle at 2.490 and Aethlon Medical Inc (NASDAQ:AEMD) which gained 31.74% to close at 4.400.
The worst performers were Gordmans Stores Inc (NASDAQ:GMAN) which was down 34.78% to 0.075 in late trade, Aralez Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ARLZ) which lost 30.31% to settle at 2.46 and Osiris Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:OSIR) which was down 25.77% to 3.86 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1938 to 1280 and 47 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1515 rose and 962 declined, while 138 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.66% to 11.35.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.20% or 2.45 to $1203.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April fell 0.06% or 0.03 to hit $48.46 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 to trade at $51.42 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.00% to 1.0654, while USD/JPY fell 0.03% to 114.85.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.12% at 101.26.
